What are histology and cytology tests?

Histology or Histopathology is the diagnosis and study of diseases of the tissues. This involves examining the tissue or cells under a microscope. Histopathologists can diagnose a disease by examining a small piece of tissue from the skin or any organ. This is called a biopsy.

Cytology or Cytopathology is the diagnosis and study of diseases of cells. This involves examining cells from bodily tissues or fluids under a microscope. Since, cytology only requires studying cells, pathologists need a small sample of tissue to perform a cytology examination.
